Next, check the National Fenestration Rating Council’s (NFRC) ratings, which are found on the label. These ratings will indicate whether a window’s more suited to warm, cold or temperate climates. Listed below is an overview of what the ratings mean:

  1. U-factor - This rating gives you an idea of the window’s insulative capabilities. The lower the U-factor, the better it can insulate your home and prevent heat loss.

  2. Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) - The SHGC indicates how much heat from the sun a window can block. Window installation contractors recommend those living in cold climates to install windows with a high SHGC rating. That way, you’ll be able to maximize natural heating.

  3. Air Leakage - Given that drafty windows are responsible for up to 30% of the average home’s heat loss in winter, you should install an airtight window with a low air-leakage rating.

Gas-Filled Windows 

Here’s another thing you should know: most energy-efficient windows are filled with argon or krypton gas. Manufacturers fill the space between the window’s glass panes with these colorless, non-toxic gases to improve a replacement unit’s insulative abilities.
